About
At a predominantly Black school, the most coveted spot isn’t on the basketball team or in the marching band—it’s on the All-Stars, the school’s elite step dance team. Our story is set at the annual tryouts for the team and centers Yessica, a powerful step dancer whose passion for step is deeply personal. Taught by her father before he disappeared from her life, step dance is more than movement—it’s her connection to him. She lives for the rhythm, the history, and the power of step, but to make the team, she’ll have to prove she’s more than just talent—she'll have to prove she belongs. With every round, tensions rise. Personal stakes collide. Friendships form and rivalries ignite.
With electrifying choreography, pulsating hip-hop, and raw emotional storytelling, Step Kids is an explosive celebration of movement, resilience, and the communities that form when we come together to create something greater than ourselves.
